Review: Soul of the Sword by Julie Kagawa

★★★★ @Jkagawa #bookreivew #mustread #epicquest

This epic quest continues with Yumeko responsible for ensuring the powerful scroll would not be put together and allow the a wish to be made by the person holding it. This book is not a standalone and must be read in the order it was written.

Things go awry in this intricate world of warring clans. Yumeko is never sure if her ally today will be her enemy tomorrow. One thing can be said of Yumeko, is that regardless of what others think or demand of her, she always follows her heart. This can be dangerous because it has caused a couple of epic failures which results in a loss of heavy hitters' support. Yumeko is the underdog who is fighting against so many odds it can be soul crushing. Along with all of this, she is learning more about her powers and what she can do as a Kitsune.

I am sensing that Yumeko is merely a pawn used by some very powerful forces. And I don't think any of the forces are for good. Things are not looking good for Yumeko as she takes some severe losses. The choices she has to make are difficult and I'm constantly amazed by how true she stays on what she considers is right and wrong. She is a rare individual who cannot be bribed despite her Kitsune nature. It is a dichotomy Ms. Kagawa creates with great care.

This follow up book is rich with magic and fantasy. I highly recommend this to high fantasy readers who are compelled to root for the underdog.
