Review: Atonement Sky by Nalini Singh

ree

When looking for a comfortable romance with a familiar formula, Atonement Sky checks all the boxes for me. I have loved the psy-changeling novels from the very beginning. This Trinity story arc/spin-off continues this winning formula of girl meets boy.

For hopeless romantics wanting second chance romance, this is the one for you. What I enjoy about Ms. Singh's romances is that they are filled with angst and tough decisions. What may look like a grievous betrayal from one side, it may have been a decision that saved many other lives. What happens if there are no good choices. And the choices end in life or death consequences? Now let's make this personal with all the emotions of young love. Now I'm captivated and I am invested in this story.

Eleri Dias returns to the place that filled her with wonderment but also caused her the greatest shame. Living on borrowed time, she is trying to solve a murder that she believes is the work of a serial killer. I liked Eleri. She is determined and she understand making the hard choices so others do not have to do so. She faces her past with bravery not seen in many. Her life is complicated and she has people who depend upon her. Her interactions with Adam Garrett is painful to witness. Adam is so sure he knows the answers and so sure that he understands the sequence of events.

I enjoyed the conflict in this book because this shows how difficult and messy life can be. It also shows that there are times where sacrifices have to be made and sometimes, everyone loses. Whilst this conflict is being resolved, there are several other subplots to keep my attention as well as little hints of the overarching plot. I still want to know how they save all the psy as their world is melting down. When will I receive the conclusion to this long and drawn out slow death. As far as the subplots, I like learning about secret bonds between the psy. As well the serial killer suspense part of this book. Ms. Singh does a nice job of blending all the threads for a riveting read.

The story pace is slow. There is a slow burn between Eleri and Adam which works for me. We also get to learn more about the winged shifters which I'm so thrilled to read about. I always love reading about different types of shifters. Or in this universe, we call them changelings. There are a couple of great discoveries and surprises that help others in this world. I loved that about this book. Even through all the anguish and hopelessness, the story ends in a happily ever after. The journey Eleri takes is cathartic and she receives her better ending than her beloved mentor.

This paranormal romance is recommended to readers who enjoy suspense mixed with a second chance romance.
