The druid mystery keeps getting better and better. When I first starting reading this spin-off, it was questionable for me. What I like about this series is how it keeps me constantly guessing. It also gives a Stranger Things vibe with an alternate universe with a monster in it. In this latest installment, it is brutal with the reveals. Carlyle and Song/Devon are taken on a reveal that changes how they see everything.
I am not sure what is going on with the authors I have been reading as of late. Each of them have become darker with characters that exhibit heinous cruelty. In this one, Carlyle is on a mission to find his father. He knows another group of Druids that he left behind is after his father. He is determined to save him. He's determined to use anyone and anything to achieve his goal. Devon falls into his clutches and she's the key to unraveling the dreaded London Druids. What Carlyle does not know is that Devon is a name Song goes by when she's working. There are many twists and turns as Carlyle tries to figure out where is father is being held a prisoner.
What made this story good for me was the amount of pain and betrayal doled out. In addition, the sacrifice a parent made for their child is incredible. I loved it. This metaphoric dagger in heart as well as in the back gave me such a high in emotional distress. My feelings ran the gamut between fury, rage, and satisfaction. This is a dark tale recommended for readers who accept that sometimes, there are no happily ever afters for everyone.
