Review: Untamed Flame: Cold Authority by Candace Blevins

A coming of age book always catches my attention. When it is a trilogy with vampires, dragons, and shifters - oh my. This trilogy is focused on Emmy, Aaron Drake's eldest daughter. Aaron went a bit wild and believes it is cheaper by the dozen which is why Emmy has so many siblings. Emmy as the oldest and heir to the throne is placed under a lot of pressure by her parents. When under pressure, there must be a release . . . For Emmy, her choice of release is frowned upon, because she is female. I went into this first book expecting a lazy diva - spoiled and bratty. To my pleasant surprise, Emmy is none of those.

Emmy is a woman in her twenties and enjoying life. She takes a page from her father's book by experimenting with a few lovers. She is no where near what he has slept through, and yet she is held at a different standard. A standard that causes her to have to move from university after university. Once I realized this, I became team Emmy all the way. She is young, gorgeous, and highly intelligent. Her PhD is fascinating and learning about what she hopes to accomplish. I am geeked out to see what she accomplishes with her dissertation.

This first book brings Emmy to the cold and dark Alaska. It is almost as if she has been exiled from her family because of her fun time in college. Her grades are exemplary; her sexual extra curricular activities . . . are also exemplary. Under Abbott now named Zander's watchful eye, Emmy needs to prove that she can be trusted.

I love the set up of this book because all my preconceived notions about Emmy are blown out of the water within the first few chapters. Emmy is exuberant and honestly a woman I admire and would totally befriend. Her parents cutting her off her trust fund seems not only extreme, but unfair. Unfair because it is as if they are unable to understand nor see Emmy for herself. She is young and this first book helps her get back on the path of her goals. And Emmy learned a very difficult lesson that I don't believe her parents intended her to learn. The ramifications of this lesson may distress her parents, and I'm glad they suffer for it.

There is little romance in this story but a lot of sexy times. This is RACK and dark readers will revel in the special vampire "conference". To read about the kinky parts - check out my review here. This paranormal fantasy is highly recommended to readers who enjoy character progression themes.

* I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
