They say that one moment in time can change the trajectory of your life forever. Sometimes it is a decision we make without thought. Sometimes it is being at the wrong place at the wrong time. For Sloan, this is the case. Recovering from an unfortunate incident, she is trying to put her life back together. Where better place to do so, than with parents in your hometown?
This could be a big city girl returning too a small hometown and finding the love of her life in a second chance romance. This is not the direction we venture. Instead, Sloan is doing her best to stay sharp and get back into what she loves doing, being a police office. She may be healing, but that doesn't mean her inquisitive mind stops or takes a break. Seeing a missing person's report has her thinking. Before long, she is diving in deep, taking on a case that isn't really hers.
What I like about this story is the mystery portion. Sloan uses her detective skills to chase down clues and solves the mystery. As we learn about Sloan and her life as it was and how it could be again, in comes a wild card. Noah. Noah's history is vastly different from Sloan's yet they have a common interest. This pairing works out well for me. Because the relationship seems to grow organically. It isn't contrived or love at first sight. The pace is just right for this good length book.
This story could stand on its own without the romantic interest. The romantic element gives it a softer feel to it and a bit more nuance. This is one of Ms. Roberts's skills she excels at in her writing style. Years of her writing always gives a polish and smooth read. I devoured this book in a night. Recommended to suspense readers who enjoy a bit of romance.
