Fake relationships are generally a rocky ride. With Mercy's impulsive action to support Lexington, the events unfolding are mostly expected. I am generally not a fan of fake relationships but this one, I understood why it happened and it took some wild turns that kept me riveted. I will admit, the only reason why I kept reading is because of Mercy. When it comes to being dealt a raw hand, Mercy wins.
What happened to Mercy from a fiance perspective is terrible. No one wishes that on anyone. But to immediately have another punch in the gut with her twin sister? That is absolutely devastating. Mercy is literally the last man standing and this makes me so sad for her. Her life is filled with loss and I am surprised she does not have separation anxiety. What is natural is to break away from everything and everyone that reminds her of all her losses. That would be the huge Montgomery family down to her childhood best friend, Lexington.
Whilst this story pivots around the fake relationship Mercy creates to help Lexington, I cannot help but think this is also a second chance theme. As we learn more about Lexington's history with Mercy, it is clear that "bros before hos" mentality has done him wrong. Still, I cannot say that I like Lexington as much. His treatment of Mercy when things go sideways at the fault of his own is immature, disappointing, and makes him untrustworthy in my book. He cannot be counted on when the going goes rough. And with how Mercy's life has been up to date, she has more bad times than good times.
Still, the chemistry between Lex and Mercy is palpable and I wish for that happily ever after for Mercy. The bonus that comes with Lex is a large family. He is lucky to have a wonderful support system of parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, and uncles. This is what Mercy needs and that is what makes this story for me. As with many of Ms. Ryan's stories, there is always one character who is a bonehead. I'll let you figure which one I think it is based on my musing. Overall, this was a moving read with a happy ending. Recommended to readers who enjoy a wholesome story with just enough reality to make it believable.
