When it comes to paranormal suspense with romance neatly entwined, Jayne Ann Krentz is always a winner for me. In the latest story, We are pull back into Fogg Lake and the mysterious government experimentation. The character types are familiar with Sophy Harper and Luke Wells. Sophy is the responsible one whilst Luke is the broody man with trust issues. Their families have a history together that has been mostly bad in the last few generations, but that could all change when they find out what really happened that started the "feud".
I like Sophy. She's sensible as librarians often are and she's straightforward. Her hobby as a PI makes sense because she does do research. I love how she stands her ground against both Luke and his family when she goes in search of her missing aunt. Imagine her surprise when her missing aunt is somehow involved with the dreaded Wells family and it seems like it is an intimate type of involvement. Pushing past her grudge, Sophy drags Luke along to find their respective missing aunt and uncle.
This plot of this story is familiar which makes it so easy to read and comfortable. Ms. Krentz always weaves a believe tale that makes me think there really are psychic families out there, doing the good work that I am happily oblivious about. From a character perspective, both Sophy and Luke are likeable. Their sexual chemistry is palpable and they pair together well. And yet, the main start of the show is . . . Luke's dog. This isn't the first series where I'm completely captivated by a pet of the main character. Finding out that the dog is part of the Fogg Lake mystery increases my interest. I seriously expect to see more dogs showing up in following books! wink wink, nudge nudge
This story unwinds past hurts and misunderstandings between the families. It brings them back to a partnership that they used to enjoy before egos and power clashed. I enjoyed the little details to try and solve the mystery before Sophy and Luke. I do have to say, with the consistent them of "health/artist resorts" ended up like cons or worse in Ms. Krentz's stories, I am now hesitant to try many retreats that look amazing on a resort website.
This romantic suspense is recommended to all readers who enjoy intrigue, old government conspiracies, and a trusty smart dog.
