Review: Unholy Gambit by Candace Blevins

ree

What happens if you know you have a certain memory, but you know it cannot be true. Aurélie is a chess master who is working to heal the last of her physical childhood trauma. She is smart and fearless. As a survivor, she is still under the care of a psychiatrist. Unfortunately for her, this person has a foot in the paranormal world and he notices something about her that triggers warnings for him. This leads to opening a whole can of worms.

Full disclosure, I did not read the book blurb and just read it cold. This is because I love reading Ms. Blevins' books and knew what to expect for the most part. This story nailed it for character development, world building, and an intriguing plot. I am also used to her spicier to mucho caliente romances. What I did not expect is the vanilla romance and I loved it. The interactions between Aurélie and her mysterious saviour, Axel is passionate and filled with sexual tension. LOVE IT!

The path for Axel to return to Aurélie is sweeping off the feet romantic and is swoon worthy. I do have a preference for the bad boys who are high functioning sociopaths. Axel's life as a vampire has changed over the decades and centuries. If one were to be stuck in the same pattern for centuries with zero growth, I would think that would be hell. The Axel of today is different that the one of yesteryears. Unfortunately, immortals or near immortals have a long memory and do not forgive. Sometimes to start new life, past scores need to be settled and it can be brutal.

This story gave me all the feel goods as well as the erotic energy I love. This is a wonderful Halloween themed tale recommended to all paranormal romance lovers.

* I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
