Wait, there is now a refuge for the magically endowed? Different than Ironhall and not with elves? And who is Hector? I have read all the book in this series and others and I do not seem to remember Hector. What I am learning about him, I am liking. I am a bit mixed on his fated mate, Emilia. For those who have been reading this series, more questions show up and few are answered. This is a recurring theme. For new to the Dragon Kings series, this book can be read as a standalone. There are brief recaps to help provide context in this complex world.
I went into this book blind because I will read anything written by Ms. Grant. I ended up reading this story in one sitting and I thoroughly enjoyed the ride. This is an easy read with a likeable hero. I also adored his little sidekick, Teo. Teo stole the show for me. Emilia is the one who needed to grow more in this book and it is good to see her character progression. She starts off as a timid mouse but is she really this much of a doormat? Or is there something else which is driving her to stay under the radar?
Pairing Emilia and Hector together worked for me. They matched well and their hearts are aligned in sacrificing for the greater good. The conflict in this story helped create a stronger bond in a quicker time period for them. There was nothing that was unexpected or a major surprise. I also would not say that the sequence of events unfolding were predictable. They do fall in line with how Ms. Grant likes to set up her villains. In a nutshell, power grab and greed is almost always the motivator for her bad guys.
I am interested in the newer technology and I'm still very curious how this will all play out. This paranormal romance is recommended to readers who root for the underdog.
