Review: Stolen in Death by J.D. Robb

A person can be totally different for two different people. This is certainly the case for Nathan's father. No one knew until after Nathan inherited everything things were not exactly right in the family. This latest edition in the In Death series takes a different look at families and secrets. Sometimes a beloved grandfather may not be what others see.

This is an intriguing ride to determine who and why Nathan was killed. Do the crimes of a philanthropist negate the good they or their company has done? In the words of one of characters from my author authors, "what did they do that required them to do so much philanthropy?" Implying that they must have committed heinous crimes.

Discovering skeletons in the proverbial closet created a mess for Nathan's surviving family. To have it tie in some way to Roark, Eve's husband is intriguing. I am not sure if I like how many different crimes have paths that cross Roark's past life. Does it show how so many events are entwined and this is cool? Or does it make it too easy for Eve to tug on unofficial strings to solve the crime. Regardless of the reader's opinion on this plot device, the sleuthing in the story worked well for me. I loved how Eve chased down each clue and solved the crime.

Sometimes the mysteries, we know the criminal up front. In this one, we do not and we have to follow along with Eve to solve the case. I find I like not knowing better than knowing up front. This way, there is more suspense and pulls me into the story more. I am fully engaged and invested in trying to figure out before Eve . . . the bad guy. I did not figure it out but I did suspect. This suspense thriller is recommended to readers who enjoy whodunnit books set in the near future.
