A fan of Ms. Henry's stories, she is solidly in her contemporary romance era with a dash of bittersweet humour. This book elicited mixed feelings for me because within the first chapter, I am already anticipating a painful revelation for Matt. These two best friends, Matt and Jacob are going on a trip of their lifetime after their high school graduation.
It is clear that Matt has a goal and Jacob is a bit oblivious. This goof sweet bromance is fun to witness as it unfolds. The experiences they have on their road trip across the country on the other hand is cringe worthy at times. Sometimes, I'm incredulous these two boys haven't killed themselves out of sheer naivety.
This is a coming of story that does not pull any punches. I have always admired Author Lisa Henry in how she does not sugarcoat life. She clearly sets up how actions have consequences. Sometimes, the consequences are dire and severe. Sometimes, there is no safety net to catch those who make foolish decisions.
What I found interesting in this story is the dysfunctional yet very accurate depiction of a child unwanted by divorced parents. It is clear that whilst Matt wants a relationship, his parents do not want him. Their actions speak loudly and this breaks my heart. Matt isn't a bad kid. He is a prickly one due to what is clear, parental neglect and a possibly a fear of abandonment. Whilst this could be a funny romantic comedy, it is more a growth into adulthood for Matt. Jacob also learns things but nothing as pivotal as poor Matt. There are no surprises in this story for the reader, only surprises for these two boys.
This romantic comedy is recommended to YA readers who love a good bromance.
